Volunteering at the island's animal welfare presented her with her first infectious disease case, a rare form of neurological, canine distemper. She became fascinated by diseases. However the idea of infectious diseases fell by the wayside when she moved to Atlanta, GA for a B.S. in Neuroscience at Agnes Scott College.
